Things you should avoid to prevent swollen gums

Discolored, sensitive, and swollen gums that easily bleed, and bad breath that won’t go away. If you notice any of these symptoms occurring then you should be alarmed -you may have gum problems! As with treating, it is best to know the causes of these problems so you can prevent them from causing further damage. Here are some things to look out for if you’re not sure on what’s causing your gum problems:
Lack of dental care – the most basic requirement in maintaining an excellent dental health is taking care of your teeth and gums. This would include brushing at least twice a day and flossing every after meal. Not doing so would cause food debris to form a thin layer of bacteria called plaque and would harden to tartar. When this isn’t taken care of, it could cause a bacterial infection.
Improper oral care – you may be brushing your teeth and flossing after meals but if you are doing it too aggressively, it’s not going to be of any help. Our gums are made of soft tissues and fierce brushing or flossing will damage them.
Smoking – I can’t stress this enough but excessive smoking will lead to many health problems. The most considerable things this act offers for your dental health are discolored teeth and gums, plaque buildup, mouth dryness, bad breath and lowered immune system which makes you an easy target for bacterial infection.
Malnutrition or improper diet – our teeth and gums are made up of tissues that also require vitamins and minerals for nourishment. Likewise, eating too much sugary foods will easily trigger plaque buildup. The solution simply is to plan for a proper diet which contains a suitable amount of calcium, vitamin C and iron.
Stress and other medical related conditions – stress triggers our body to be on a heightened mode. This could back you up on small doses; making it easier to handle tasks but if this occurs constantly, it’s going to take its toll on your body – specifically, it would lower your immune system, making it easier for infections to progress. Not saying here, that you should quit your job, stop studying or kill whatever is causing that stress but make sure to find time for yourself to unwind and take care of your mental health.
