Tonsillolith is a term referred to the accretion of bacteria, food particles and other substances that get wedged at the back of the throat.  The exact cause of tonsilloliths remains a mystery.  There are different factors that can bring about this condition.  Before going about dissecting what may cause it, you may want to know that the main function of the tonsil is to filter detrimental microorganisms from getting into our system.  By this role, it also end up acquiring mucus, dead cells, food particles and other debris and these gets lodged in the crannies of the tonsil.

Without proper oral hygiene or simple procedure of flushing mouth with water, the trapped particles will stay stuck until it forms to become tonsil stones.  At one point these stones can cause pain and discomfort.  So who wants this malady?  This affects adults more than it affects children.  When you notice a rancid taste inside your mouth by your throat coupled with cough and sore throat, these may be signs that stones have formed in your tonsil.

Bad breath is another indication of tonsil stones but other factors may cause halitosis.  When there is inflammation of the throat or in the tonsil area then be wary as you may be growing stones back there.  Ear ache and swallowing difficulty may be telling you that indeed there is something going on.  Also the stones can be felt although cannot be seen immediately without closer inspection.

To prevent such condition, as always reiterated when it affects the oral cavity, proper hygiene is the key.  It is not enough to be brushing once a day.  Include mouth rinses and gargles in order for whatever particles stuck at the back of the throat may get loosened and flushed out.  It is also a good practice to use a tongue scraper to neutralize the anaerobic bacteria found underneath the tongue’s surface and far back.  Using oxygenating products could help.

Drink plenty of water to continuously flush particles lodged in the tonsil.  Avoid sweet drinks since the sugar content will leave a sticky deposit that will aid in forming tonsil stones that we do not want.  Bacteria and other debris not only get through the mouth, it can pass through the nose and end up at the back of the through as with post nasal drip.  And before things get worst, consult with your dentist or perhaps an ENT to be guided accordingly.
